Fiesta en honor de la Teniente Coronel Zeinab Rabold
El 15 de agosto en el Palacio Latino, líderes de la comunidad hispana se reunieron para celebrar la promoción a Teniente Coronel de la Policía de Baltimore de Zeinab Rabold, Puerto Riqueña, que por más de dos años ejerció el cargo de Jefa de Distrito del Sudoeste con gran éxito. Miembros de la comunidad se reunieron pasra celebrar. Entre ellos se encontraban Enrique Ribadeneira, dueño del Palacio Latino, Bill Villanueva, presidente del Hispanic Business Conference, José Ortiz, dueño de AllState Carpet, José Ruiz, Enlace del Alcalde con la Comunidad Hispana, Jorge Austrich, presidente del Club Democrático Hispano, Luis Borunda, presidente de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Baltimore, Gigi Guzmán, chairman de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Maryland acompañada por muchos de los estudiantes de Gitech, Dick Colón, chairman de EBLO, Gilberto de Jesús, Abogado Federal, la Dra. Estela Gonzalez, de la Comisión del Gobernador en Asuntos Hispanos, Jaime Schwartzberg, Ingeniero Estructural miembro de Spanish Town Community Development, Jean Velez de la Assisi House y Javier Bustamante, chairman del Spanish Town Community Development, que actuó de Maestro de Ceremonias.

Más de cien personas se dieron cita para escuchar a la Teniente Coronel Rabold, que vino con su madre e hijas, y pequeños tributes de los presentes. Excelente velada que mostró la gran unidad de la comunidad hispana de Baltimore.


Centro de la Comunidad will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month this year by planting trees to represent all Spanish-speaking countries from North, Central, and South America, plus the Caribbean and Europe. It will take place on Saturday, September 28th, from 10 am to noon in the smaller extension of Patterson Park. You may enter from Eastern Avenue, corner of Potomac. This activity is being done in collaboration with and support from Friends of Patterson Park, Baltimore Department of Recreation and Parks, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

The theme is "Sembrando Nuestras Raices" (Planting Our Roots). Teams of 4 volunteers each are needed to represent each country and help plant the trees on Saturday, September 28th, from 10 am to 12 pm. Ideally, each volunteer team should be from each of the countries, which are listed below. If you are interested in forming a team to represent the country of your origin or interest, please respond via return Email.

The following Saturday, October 5th, we will have a dedication ceremony & festivities from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm to which everyone in the community will be invited. The countries to be represented are:

Argentina - Bolivia - Brasil - Chile - Colombia - Costa Rica - Cuba - Dominican Republic - Ecuador
- El Salvador - Guatemala - Honduras - Mexico - Nicaragua - Panama - Paraguay - Peru - Puerto Rico - Spain - Uruguay - Venezuela. Trees will also be planted for the United States, Maryland, Baltimore City, and the victims from the 9/11 attack.

That's 25 trees and we need 25 teams of 4 persons each, with a designated team leader. Those interested, please respond by Email to centro@us.net

Mayor O'Malley introduces police Majors to the citizens
Flanked by his cabinet and members of many departments, the Mayor explained the efforts of his administration to combat crime in the city. Commissioner Norris introduced the new district Commanders and the Mayor asked for questions or comments. Beltran Navarro, a member of the Hispanic community and a candidate for the State Central Committee approached the microphone and praise the Mayor and Commissioner Norris for their excellent job in fighting crime. Specifically, Navarro mentioned how "from seven Hispanic officers and a lonely Hispanic sargeant" before O'Malley's time, the force has gone "up t0 over one hundred Hispanic officers and a Hispanic Lieutenant Colonel and there are no Hispanic drug dealers." Gitech Awards5th Annual Hispanic Workforce Gala celebrates its graduates
On July 26th. at the Fountain Bleu in Glen Burnie, Gitech celebrated the 2002 graduating class -73 of them- in its many disciplines. Gigi Guzman, the school director and Chaiman of the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce directed the event. Among the atendees we saw Jorge Austrich, President of the Hispanic Democratic Club, Luis Borunda, President of the Baltimore Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Ben Mason, Executive Director of the Baltimore Chamber of Commerce, Dick Colon, Chairman of MACE Electric, Bill Villanueva, President of M&W Medical, Cecilia Castellanos and countless others. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend gave a rousing speech and told the community to watch Jorge Austrich and "learn his face well because he is destined to play a very important role" in her administration.
