Maryland Hispanic Business Conference
This year the Hispanic Community hosted its first ever, statewide Hispanic Business Conference in Maryland. The event was held from Wednesday, October 16 thru Friday, October 18, 2002, at the Wyndham Inner Harbor Hotel con toda pompa y ceremonia. The mission of the Conference was to increase business opportunities and strengthen the economic and community impact of Hispanic-American businesses. Keynote speakers were Maryland's Senator Paul Sarbanes and Baltimore's Mayor Martin O'Malley. The Hispanic community is now poised to become one of the key economic engines driving the growth of our state and regional economy. See their press release or See their website here.

Continuing with the case of the Salvadorean savagely beaten by members of the Sheriff department, Baltimore State's Attorney Patricia Jessamy met with members of the Hispanic community at the Centro de la Comunidad. Essentially, Ms. Jessamy stated that her office is a prosecutor's office and not an investigative office. Moreover, law enforcement ofices in the state of Maryland investigate themselves. Once the Sheriff's office concludes its investigation of the facts surrounding the Sanchez's case it will give it to Ms. Jessamy's office for her to decide whether to prosecute, convene a Grand Jury or dismiss the case. Meanwhile Ms. Jessamy promised to make a public statement requesting witnesses to the event to come forward to testify, either to the Sheriff's ofice or to her own office. She asked that Tom Krehely of her office be contacted at 410-361-9854 for information regarding the Lexington Market events.

Centro de la Comunidad celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month this year by planting trees representing all Spanish-speaking countries from North, Central, and South America, plus the Caribbean and Europe. More than fifty members of the Hispanic community as well as environmentalists, passers-by and curious onlookers helped plant 25 trees to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. See news

Por primera vez el estado de Maryland tiene candidatos hispanos en posiciones de importancia en el estado. Todos ellos demócratas, se espera que ganen también en la elección general. Enhorabuena.

Recibí por email un aviso de suscripción a la revista cultural Coloquio. Gracias a ello pude conocer la publicación online que Ud. dirige. He podido ver que se trata de una revista dedicada a temas culturales, dirigida a la gente de habla hispana de Baltimore, que se viene publicando desde el año 1986. Resultó para mí una sorpresa porque yo mantengo un sitio web católico dedicado a la Abadía de San Benito, Luján, Argentina, monasterio perteneciente a la Orden Benedictina. El sitio se encuentra en www.sbenito.org - Dentro de él encontrará una revista que tiene el mismo nombre que la suya: Coloquio. En nuestro caso comenzó a publicarse en 1988, y está dedicada a temas de espiritualidad monástica, sin imágenes, de solo texto. Hasta hoy se publica en papel, al modo tradicional. Pero hace un tiempo agregué algunos números en nuestro sitio web. En nuestro caso el nombre de la revista está tomado de una frase tomada del relato de la vida de San Benito Abad, escrita hace más de 1500 años por otro santo, el papa San Gregorio Magno. Allí se relata un encuentro de San Benito con su hermana Santa Escolástica, y se dice que pasaron toda la noche en "santos coloquios" sobre temas espirituales. Por supuesto no teníamos hasta hoy ninguna noticia de la existencia de su revista. Le escribo solo para comentarle esta extraña coincidencia. Espero recibir sus comentarios si le parece oportuno. EQUIVOCACIÓN CON EL FRANCOTIRADOR

Unos y otros se EQUIVOCAN a su manera. Pero dejemos a las autoridades tranquilas por el momento, pues han cumplido muy bien con su deber. Como dijimos ayer, nos re-re-repetían que habían detenido a un par de hispanos que viajaban en una camioneta blanca (imagínense, ¡como si los asesinos fueran a seguir usando ese tipo de vehículo!), ya que “estaban en el lugar EQUIVOCADO en el momento EQUIVOCADO”.

Aquí, indudablemente, los que están EQUIVOCADOS son los presentadores y no los pobres hispanos que nada tenían que ver con los trágicos acontecimientos. Lo que ha pasado, claro, es que han hecho una transliteración o traducción a la letra de la frase “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.

Pero esos inocentes no se equivocaron, no hicieron nada indebido, no dieron un solo paso en falso. Lo que pasó fue otra cosa, muy distinta: estaban en MAL lugar, en MAL momento. Y por casualidad.

Los que dieron un paso en falso, afortunadamente, fueron los asesinos, que hicieron referencia a otra fechoría suya en Montgomery, Alabama, lo cual dio a la policía la pista que necesitaba.

Felicitamos a la policía por una labor bien hecha, pues su buen manejo de la situación ha tranquilizado a la población en la región de la capital, que ya no será objetivo de arteros disparos. No así a los presentadores de noticias, cuyo pobre manejo del idioma nos intranquiliza cada vez que sintonizamos las noticias en el espanglés que arteramente nos disparan cuando menos nos lo esperamos.

Or so said the Montgomery County, Maryland, Chief of Police when referring, repeatedly, to the murderer who has been going around shooting people on the streets as if out hunting wild animals in the woods. His words were to the effect that his department was working on leads in order to apprehend "the gentleman."

I’m sure the killer appreciates being called a "gentleman". That’s quite a lofty category to be in, particularly after having shot and killed –or at least wounded– a number of innocent victims.

When a police chief says it, the situation –linguistically, if not legally– must be getting pretty serious. For reasons worthy of sociological –if not psychological– research, criminals are frequently identified with the term "gentleman" on radio and television, as well as in the printed media. But I never thought I’d hear it from someone in a position to intimately know what lawbreakers are like.

Which leads to a question: if we’re trying to improve the status and sense of self-worth of criminals, can "nice man", "philanthropist" and "do-gooder" be far away?

Otherwise, would it be too much to ask future users to choose one of the following terms, instead: assassin, murderer, killer, slayer..., or at least sniper, criminal, lawbreaker, wrongdoer?

It might not solve the crime, but at least we’d feel better at not having the guilty party coddled within the category of well-bred, law-abiding citizens.
