The Asociacion Tepeyac, Regional Antorcha Guadalupana Committee,
Mexico Solidarity Network, Pasamontanas, Committee in Solidarity
with the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, and many community
leaders bring for the 5th consecutive year the Torch Runners. The
Torch Runners 2002 is a torch run in relays as a pilgrimage to celebrate
the appearance of the Brown Virgin of Guadalupe on December 12,
1531 to a poor Indian named Juan Diego. The Virgen of Guadalupe
has served as a symbol of unity and courage in social-political
struggles such as during the Mexican independence from Spain, during
the Mexican Revolution and during the Cesar Chavez’ Farm Workers
Movements in the United States. Once again the Virgin of Guadalupe
leads the Movement in the struggle for the legalization of undocumented
immigrants in the United States. The Torch Runners 2002 carry the
message of support for a General Amnesty, Papers for All and in
support of the Freedom Act which would legalize more than 9 million
undocumented immigrant workers and families in the United States.
The Torch Runners will cross more than 36 cities in the states of
Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina,
North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, District of Columbia, Delaware,
New Jersey, and finally they will arrive in New York. The Torch
Run began in Mexico City at the Basilica of Guadalupe and it will
conclude at St. Patricks Cathedral in New York City. The Torch Runners
2002 will cross the Greater Metropolitan Area on the following dates:
Thursday December 5th Stafford, Virginia
Friday December 6th Manassas, Virginia
Saturday December 7th Washington DC
Sunday December 8th Baltimore, Maryland
On Saturday, December 7th from 2-5pm, we will hold an ecumenical
vigil by the Washington Monument by Constitution Avenue and between
7th and 15th Streets. We urge that people get involved and take
an active role as volunteers, runner or financial contributors to
a just cause for undocumented immigrants in the United States. Come
and join us to welcome these courageous runners and uplift the message
of unity, equality and justice for all.

Antorcha Guadalupana News Brief Antorcha Guadalupana 2002--Guadalupana
Torch Runers 2002
The Asociación Tepeyac brings for the fifth consecutive year
the Antorcha Guadalupana from the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico
City to St. Patricks Cathedral in New York City. The Antorcha Guadalupana
is a torch run in relays as a pilgrimage to celebrate the appearance
of the Brown Virgin of Guadalupe. On December 12, 1531 the Brown
Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to a poor indian named Juan Diego in
the hill of Tepeyac, northwest of Mexico City. The Antorcha Guadalupana
will take 45 days from Mexico City to New York City stopping in
more than 400 parishes. It will begin with the blessing of the torch
on October 29, 2002 at the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City
passing through the mexican states of Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz,
and Tamailipas; then, the Mexican American youth will cross the
border with the torch passing through the states of Texas, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia,
Washington DC, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and finally arriving
in New York city where approximately at 10am will be a mass celebration.
This year’s Antorcha Guadalupana’s theme is to carry
the message of support for a General Amnesty and in support of the
Freedon Act which would legalize more than 9 million undocumented
immigrants in the United States. The runners will carry the message
for the dignity of immigrants that are
divided by a border. They will cross 45 cities, 9 in Mexico and
36 in the United States. At the arrival of the Guadalupana Torch
Runners, we will hold an Ecumenical Vigil on Saturday December 7th
in Washington DC to express our support to this historical event.
On this day we will hold an ecumenical event in front of the Washington
Memorial by 7th and 15th Streets and Constitution Avenue from 2-5pm.
