Referendum forces Downsizing. As mandated by law, Mayor Martin O'Malley today presented to City Council the decennial Baltimore City redistricting plan, a proposal complicated by a recent referendum which required City officials to reduce the size of the council by almost 25-percent. Because the City's Republican and Democratic primaries are currently scheduled for September 2003, the map must be presented to the Council by February 1, 2003. The Council has 60 days to approve the redistricting plan. If Council amends the plan, it can still be vetoed by the Mayor. Mayoral veto can only be overridden by a supermajority of the council, which would entail 15 votes. If no plan is adopted within 60 days, the Mayor's original plan is automatically adopted. Javier, ¿ Guerra con Iraq? Desde hace 12 años, Iraq ha sido observado, limitado en su comercio y sujeto a bombardeos al sur del paralelo 33 y al norte del paralelo 36. Ese Iraq debilitado, es acusado de estar a punto de desencadenar una guerra que pondrá en peligro a los Estados Unidos!!. Con esa premisa se ha mobilizado la mayor fuerza militar que los siglos hayan visto, lista para para arrasar Iraq con una lluvia de 3000 proyectiles en las primeras 48 horas, los B-1 y B-2 dejando caer bombas de 2000 libras cada una y cien mil soldados invadiendo Iraq por el Norte y por el Sur, De acuerdo con nuestro presidente, todas las condiciones estipuladas por la resolución 1441 de las Naciones Unidas han de cumplirse. Cada concesión de Iraq es recibida a con escepticismo. Iraq debe mostrar las armas que no tiene!. La influencia de la presidencia ha forzado, o comprado, a los lideres indecisos. Aún los opuestos a aceptar la necesidad de ir a la guerra han caído bajo la presión presidencial.. Fue bochornoso el cambio de opinión de Colin Powell. Da pena ver a un hombre de su estatura cambiar de posición y convertirse en el representante de las ideas con las que hasta ayer no ha estado de acuerdo. Nosotros conocemos su brillante pasado, pero el tiene que pensar en su futuro. Nosotros nos oponemos a la guerra porque no hay motivo y porque no será una guerra, sino una masacre, una carnicería. He/she could have chosen any number of amusing responses; however, she responded using cheap, two-dimensional stereotypes of Hispanics and Latin Americans, revealing not only his/her racism but also his/her profound ignorance of who we are. We are not just 'the help' and the 'leaf blowers'. We are architects and activists, journalists and doctors, governors and athletes, scientists and business people. We are Nobel Prize Winners and Rhodes Scholars. We speak Spanish, AND we also speak fluent English, and many of us speak other languages as well. As of last week, we are officially the largest minority population in the United States at 37 million and 13% of the population. Without us, the economy o f this nation and the Americas, and consequently the world, would come to a complete standstill. If the columnist were even remotely cultured or educated, he/she would have read and lost herself in the exquisite writings of Nobel prize winners Octavio Paz, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, and Pablo Neruda. She would know that Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz was one of the first feminists and poets in the Americas. She would admire Isabel Allende and Sandra Cisneros for their passionate prose and vibrant spirits. And of course, if it had not been for us, the world would not know chocolate! And everyone knows life would not be worth living without chocolate. Finally, I would like to point out that the columnist would have NEVER written such blatantly offensive material about African-Americans or Jews, for obvious reasons. It seems that the columnist AND the Editors of the magazine believe that Hispanics and Latin Americans cannot read, and even if we could, would never be their magazine readers. For the life of me, I still cannot figure out why you chose to feature Salma Hayek on the cover and, in an article celebrating her success, you followed with such a piece so offensive -------------------------
Dear readers. We have received a good number of emails on this subject. We refuse to name the magazine and its columnist to prevent them from getting free publicity. The magazine in question is one we never read and one we consider too frivolous. This controversy however is a great favor the columnist has done for the Hispanic community. I have never seen the Hispanic/Latino community in the US so united on an issue. Such an immediate, fierce, and unanimous response has made us all aware of where our roots are and what we have in common. Great. We need a jolt every so often to get us out of our complacency and to realize that we are not yet part of this society. Not, at least, until this society accept us as equals and realizes that our culture, our language and our contributions are enriching the U.S. Meanwile, hablemos más español y leamos más nuestra literatura. Amigo Dr. Labrada: He encontrado su libro, "La Prensa LiEbre o Los Crímenes del Idioma" sumamente itnstructivo y gracioso, envuelto en un velo de nostalgia.. Usted acepta los neologismos derivados en una forma lógica del Español, pero se opone a la violación inglesa de nuestra lengua, convidando al mismo tiempo al lector a participar en su obra con frecuentes preguntas. ¿No les parece?, ¿Que piensan ustedes?. Su libro es una gran adquisición y es, en una forma muy amena, un toque de clarín para los que nos hemos estado olvidando de nuestra lengua materna. Felicidades. ATROPELLO AL IDIOMANos dice un "locotor" –lo siento, hay que calificarlos así, vistas las locuras que hacen con el idioma– que la mujer que atropelló tres veces a su esposo "salió de la corte tratando de mantener su espíritu alto" (calco de "keep her spirits up"). Sigan leyendo Gracias (y Desgracias) del Idioma - Nos dice un locutor que "el tiempo para acciones diplomáticas se le está agotando a Irak". Bueno, antidiplomáticas será, puesto que todo lo que sale de ese régimen, lamentablemente, es negativo. Pero en buen romance no diríamos "acciones" sino "gestiones", y en vez de "tiempo", "plazo". Hablando del tema, ¿le daremos otro PLAZO al locutor para que se GESTIONE lecciones de español? - Un anuncio de servicio "antipúblico" –así llamamos a los que tijeretean el español– nos dice que "miles de americanos están viviendo con HIV y desconocen su estado". Si no le incrustaron más disparates fue porque ya no cabían. ¿Qué tal si lo dijéramos en espa?ol en vez de espanglés?: miles de norteamericanos padecen (no "están viviendo") con VIH (no "HIV") sin saberlo (no "y desconocen su estado"). Al español, en cambio, lo están MATANDO. - "La mujer que atropelló tres veces a su esposo con su auto", nos dicen, "salió de la corte tratando de mantener su espíritu alto", pues nada bien le iba en el juicio. Caramba, nos recuerda el caso del suicida que para matarse se tuvo que descerrajar dieciséis disparos, por la mala puntería que tenía. Pero aquí el que tiene su "espíritu" muy bajo, bajísimo, es el reportero, que debiera trabajar para la prensa anglófona. ¿No será, más bien, que la homicida trataba de disimular su disgusto? - Más sobre el caso de la esposa que mató a su marido atropellándolo con su auto. Nos dice el mismo anglófilo cronista que los abogados "dieron sus argumentos finales", copia de "final arguments", que en español corresponde, por el lado de la fiscalía, a "concluir sus alegatos", y por el lado del acusado, a "resumir su defensa" . En este caso creo que la condena a cadena perpetua es poco para el delito de "lesa lengua" cometido por el reportero. |
