Cafe Madrid ARTEFLAMENCO
A COMPANY OF DANCERS, SINGERS AND MUSICIANS

FLAMENCO - the word conjures images of passion and fire. This music from southern Spain is born of a centuries-old fusion of Gypsies, Arabs, Jews, Europeans, and Africans. Arising from the need to express sorrow and pain as well as love and joy, it is above all, the art of the individual.

ARTE FLAMENCO, a locally based dance company, brings the drama and flair of Flamenco to the Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Drive in Baltimore, for two performances on Saturday May 3, 2003.

Since their 1998 debut at Howard Community College, Smith Theater, this exciting and vibrant group has been delighting audiences throughout the Baltimore Washington area, and as far away as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. They have performed at the Kennedy Center’s Millenium Stage both in 2001 and 2002, and have been invited for a third appearance in the 2003-2004 season. Local audiences have seen them at the Baltimore Artscape, the Washington International Folk Festival at Glen Echo, the Mexican Cultural Institute in cooperation with the Embassy of Spain, the Columbia International Festival, at all major Hispanic Festivals in Baltimore and Washington as well on Maryland Public Television.

The performance will feature artists who are highly regarded in the Flamenco genre. From the prestigious Flamenco club in Madrid, the Corral de la Moreria, comes flamenco singer, Cuquito de Barbate. Director, Natalia Monteleon has also engaged the most highly sought artists from the Baltimore/Washington area, as well as dancers, singers, and musicians from Spain and Latin America in this celebration of the ART OF FLAMENCO.
