GALA Hispanic Theatre
Presents
Paso Nuevo (GALA’s Youth Link)
in
Blood Wedding
(Bodas de sangre)
by Federico García
Lorca
bilingual adaptation
by Cornelia F. Cody
directed by Oscar
Ceville
Paso Nuevo, GALA Hispanic Theatre’s
Youth Link, is proud to present its bilingual production of the
classic, Blood Wedding (Bodas de sangre) by Spanish sage, Federico
García Lorca on May 15 at 6:30pm at the Josephine Butler
Parks Center, located at 2437 15th Street, NW.
This specially adapted version
will be performed by members of Paso Nuevo, GALA’s after-school,
theater arts program for neighborhood youth, ages 13 to 16. Free
and open to the public, it is the culmination of a semester’s
worth of work by high school students, who attend local DC Public
Schools such as Banneker and Bell Multicultural during the day.
Fifteen to twenty students will play multiple roles throughout the
play, some combining to share characters.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
While most students are new to
the program, many are alumni from last year’s program who
developed a love for the theater. Others are novices who are adapting
well to the program’s goals, which include learning to make
decisions and to improve their communications skills, onstage as
well as off. Paso Nuevo is also designed to provide a venue in which
to explore more family-related issues, such as parent/child relationships,
as well as peer relationships, conflict resolution, and teamwork.
More specifically, Paso Nuevo presents a forum in which inner-city
kids can improve their language skills, both in Spanish and English
through exercises such as improvisation and script reading, and
explore potential careers in the arts and related fields.
The Josephine Butler Parks Center
is located at 2437 15th Street, NW (between Chapin and Euclid Streets,
NW). The closest Metro station is Columbia Heights (green and yellow
lines).
