Kerry para Presidente (in English)

Mucho se ha hablado y escrito sobre las elecciones en nuestro país. En pocos días se dilucidará todo y los hispanos, por vez primera en la historia de este país, tenemos la oportunidad de elegir al presidente. Nuestros números –más de 40 millones- van a ser decisivos en esta campaña.

Pues bien, Coloquio ha decidido apoyar a John Kerry para Presidente de los Estados Unidos por los próximos cuatro años. Y la decisión tiene tanto que ver con Kerry como con Bush. Tanto lo que este ha hecho como lo que no ha hecho.

Bush nos ha metido en una guerra sin necesidad y los hispanos están pagando un precio desproporcionado con un porcentaje elevadísimo de bajas. Además empezó la guerra contra la opinión nacional e internacional y eso nos está costando la buena voluntad del mundo entero. El costo de esa guerra –unos $250 billones hasta la fecha- está robando un dinero básico para las necesidades de este país. Más de 4.3 millones de personas han caído en la pobreza desde que Bush está en el poder. Kerry va a terminar esa guerra pronto y de paso, va a conseguir de nuevo esa buena voluntad que Estados Unidos ha tenido en el mundo desde el fin de la II Guerra Mundial. Y va a prestar atención a las necesidades de los ciudadanos más necesitados.

En casa, Bush es el primer presidente desde los años 1930 que ha presidido durante la pérdida de empleos en este país –más de 2 millones. Y en el proceso, este presidente ha destrozado el superávit de más de $500 billones que le había dejado el presidente Clinton y ahora ha hecho un déficit de $440 billones –un despilfarro total de casi 1 trillón de dólares. ¿Quién pagará esa deuda? Pues nuestros hijos y nietos, a menos que lo arreglemos antes. Kerry se dedicará a restituir los empleos, tasando a las empresas que se llevan los empleos al extranjero. Y, siguiendo la pauta de Clinton, se preocupará de restituir la balanza de pagos.

La economía no levanta cabeza. Y no lo hace porque el consumidor cada día tiene menos dinero disponible –si es que tiene trabajo. Y además, el precio de la gasolina se ha disparado y la gente tiene miedo de gastar. Como consecuencia, las empresas no están contratando trabajadores normales y solo lo hacen con trabajadores temporales y sin darles beneficios. Y además, Bush ha propuesto que millones de trabajadores no tengan derecho al sobretiempo –un beneficio con el que muchos cuentan para poder sobrevivir. Kerry, como buen demócrata, se preocupa del trabajador, de la clase media y de la justicia social. Ya ha hablado de rescindir los cortes de impuestos a las personas que ganan más de $200,000 al año para poder pagar el recorte del déficit, la creación de empleos, la creación de seguro médico universal, y la protección del Seguro Social.

En el capítulo del progreso general, Bush es un desastre. Rehusó firmar el Tratado de Kyoto que ya ha sido refrendado por 126 países, incluídos todos los de la Unión Europea y Rusia. De ese tratado depende la salud del mundo entero y de sus habitantes. Kerry ha prometido firmar el tratado. Y hablando de salud, ¿cómo es posible que Bush se oponga a costear la investigación de las células madre? Ese es el campo científico más prometedor para millones de personas que sufren de enfermedades como la diabetes, Parkinsons, epilepsia y muchas otras. La diabetes es particularmente extendida entre los hispanos de este país. Solamente por eso debemos apoyar la investigación en ese campo.

Y por fin, porqué el Sr. Bush no ha dicho o hecho nada por la inmigración o las relaciones con Latinoamérica? Muchas fotos con el presidente Fox de México el primer año de la presidencia, pero nada. Los hispanos no consiguen que se acepten las licencias consulares, el único plan de inmigración propuesto por Bush -del que no se ha vuelto a oir hablar en mucho tiempo- hubiera resultado en los indocumentados dándose a conocer a las autoridades, sin garantía de empleo y con la deportación casi segura al final de tres años. Vergonzoso.

¿Qué es lo que Bush ha hecho bien en estos cuatro años? Muy poco. George Bush es el peor presidente del siglo XX y hasta ahora del XXI. Su arrogancia, ignorancia, cerrazón mental y desprecio por el sentir general del mundo entero nos está llevando al declive. Este país no puede permitirse el lujo de elegir a este hombre. John Kerry es nuestro candidato.

Senator John Kerry for President

Much has been written and spoken about the elections in our country. Soon it will all be resolved and Hispanics, for the first time in history, will have the opportunity to select a president. Our numbers -more than 40 million- are going to be decisive in this campaign.

Coloquio has decided to endorse Senator John Kerry for President of the United States for the next four years. This decision has as much to do with Kerry as it does with Bush. As much as what the latter has done as what he has not done.

Bush has plunged us in an unnecessary war and Hispanics are paying a disproportionate price in a very high casualty percentage. In addition, he began the war against national and international opinion and that is costing us the good will of the whole world. The cost of this war -about $250 billion so far- is taking needed money from the basic necessities of this country. More than 4.3 million people have fallen into poverty since Bush is president. Kerry is going to end this war soon and, in the process is going to regain the good will that the United States have enjoyed since the end of WWII. And, Kerry is going to pay attention to the needs of the citizens most in need.

At home, Bush is the first president since the '30s that has presided over the loss of jobs in this country -more than 2 million. Meanwhile he has squandered the surplus of more than $500 billion left to him by President Clinton and has spent another $440 billion for a waste of more than 1 trillion! Who will pay for such profligacy? Our children and grandchildren, that's who unless we fix the problem soon. Kerry will recover many jobs increasing taxes to those companies that take jobs abroad. And Kerry, following in Clinton footsteps will balance again the budget.

The economy can't progress because the consumer has less and less disposable money, and that is if he has a job at all. Gasoline prices have gone through the roof and people are afraid to spend. As a result, companies are afraid to hire regular workers and hire instead temporary workers and give them no health or other benefits. In addition Bush has proposed that million of workers be ineligible for overtime -a clause that many count on to just survive. Kerry, as a good democrat worries about workers, the middle class and social justice. He has already decided to rescind the tax cuts to people earning more than $200,000 a year to be able to pay for the deficit, job creation, universal health insurance and the protection of Social Security.

In general progress Bush is a disaster. He refused to sign the Kyoto agreement already signed by 126 countries included those of the European Union and Russia. On that treaty rests the health of the whole world and its inhabitants. Kerry has promised to sign the treaty. And, speaking of health: how is it possible that Bush oppose the Federal government's financing of stem cell's research? This is the most promising scientific field for millions of people suffering from diabetes, Parkinson's, epilepsy and other diseases. Diabetes particularly is widespread among Hispanics in the US. Just because of that we must support research in this field.

And finally, why has Bush not said or done anything about immigration or relations with Latin America? After many photo-ops with president Fox of Mexico, nothing has happened. Hispanics cannot get consular ids accepted in the country. The only immigration plan hinted on by Bush -from which we have not heard a peep in a long time- would have resulted in the undocumented coming out to the authorities without warranty of a job and with a virtual deportation at the end of three years. Shame on him.

What has Bush done in four years? Very little. George Bush is the worst president of the XX century and so far, of the XXI as well. His arrogance, ignorance, stubbornness and contempt for world opinion are bringing us down. This country cannot afford the luxury of electing this man. John Kerry is our candidate
