Hispanic Republicans join in a new organization

On Saturday January 22, 2005 the Hispanic Republicans of Maryland honored Dr. Luis Queral at a Luncheon in his honor at the Loews Hotel in Annapolis.

For over 40 years Dr. Queral has been an advocate of the Hispanic community. He has repeatedly underscored the importance of pride in our heritage insisting that we should never hide our cultural identity for fear of discrimination. By being involved in the political process he has stimulated the creation of Hispanic political organizations. As a result Hispanics are more visible and stronger and will continue to change the political landscape in Maryland.

Despite the huge snow storm forecast for the day, over 60 persons showed up among which were Governor Bob Ehrlich and John Kane, Chairman of the Maryland Republican party. Dr. Queral was given a lifetime achievement award and a new award, the "Queral Freedom Award" was established to be given annually to the most accomplished individual in the State of Maryland. Governor Ehrlich was the first recipient.

Hector Torres, Executive Director of the Governor's Commission on Hispanic Affairs enlightened the attendees with Census statistics on Hispanics and Hispanic issues, and Noe Garcia, Roger Campos and Raul Damas of the Republican party discussed political issues. Republican leaders of the Hispanic community were there to join in the effort.

Luis Borunda, Executive Director of the Hispanic Republicans of Maryland is to be congratulated for an excellent organization.
