Baltimore News

Dawson's Family (continues from the front page)
Darrell L. Brooks, 21, was charged with arson and six counts of murder Thursday. Police and neighbors said the Dawsons had angered Brooks by reporting neighborhood drug dealing to police. The family's house at East Preston and Eden had also been firebombed two weeks before the fatal blaze.

Vigil at Preston

On Monday the 21st., a huge vigil took place in the corner of Eden and Preston where hundreds of people congregated to hear the authorities rage against such horrible crime. These crimes have made Baltimore a crime capital and its national reputation is a shambles. The Mayor's frustration is evident since he is trying so hard to reduce the crime wave in our city. We hope, for our sakes that he is successful.

In response to the tragedy suffered by the Dawson family, the Mayor is offering a first draft of an action plan that introduces an immediate and long-term commitment to honor the memory of the Dawson family and to engage all the citizens in the process of recovery.

Law Enforcement
1. Identify offenders on supervised release (parole and probation) and build cases on those who violate their probation.
2. Attack high profile corners and arrest drug dealers.
3. Enlist the assistance of 100 troopers from the Maryland State Police to concentrate available law enforcement resources.
4. Create additional bed space in correctional facilities.
5. Top law enforcement officials to return plan to increase accountability and priority-processing of more dangerous offenders.
6. Secure overtime for parole and probation agents to work hand-in-hand with police officers.
Community Action
1. Increase the number of mentor volunteers.
2. Establish block watch programs to eventually cover all city communities.
3. Expedite Operation Nightlight – a program patterned after Boston’s successful operation that provides for curfew checks and follow-up with the highest risk kids in five different areas of the City. The first – Sandtown/Harlem Park began this weekend. Second area to open – eastside – next month.
4. Report crime and identify violators whenever possible.
5. Direct friends and family who want to help, or seek help, to 1-866- BELIEVE.
6. Encourage citizens to use the confidential tip hotline 410-685-DRUG.
Community Memorial to the Dawson’s
1. Restore the Dawson residence as quickly as possible.
2. Provide long-term support for the remaining child and father.
3. Visit the school with mentors and officials to visit routinely.
4. Institute block watch program in the neighborhood in the name of the family.

The stage at the rally
