Lope de Aguirre,
(1518-1561), Spain. Explorer

 

 

An infamous and treacherous explorer, he joined the 1560 expedition of Pedro de Ursua to find the fabled city of Eldorado at the headquarters of the Amazon River in Brazil. He mutinied, killing Ursua and many others in the party. He was captured in Venezuela, after murdering his own daughter and several priests, and was executed by the Spanish.
