Poet and Spanish novelist born in Guadix, near Granada, Spain. His novelette,"The Three-Cornered Hat" (1874) is considered a masterpiece of humor, and some of his short stories are among the best in Spanish literature. His novels, while realistic, were often superficially moralistic and romantic in tone.
