FRANCISCO DE MIRANDA

(1750-1816)Precursor of Latin American Independence. Venezuelan officer who served under Galvez during the Gulf campaigns in the American Revolution. An early leader in the fight for Latin American Independence, he was nominated generalissimo by the Executive Power of the Republic of Venezuela in 1812. After the fall of the Republic, he was taken prisoner by General Monteverde in 1812, and died in a Cadiz, Spain prison four years later.
