Winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work dealing with the effect of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) on the depletion of the ozone layer; his work has led to the current phasing out of the use of CFCs throughout the world; currently the Lee and Geraldine Martin Professor of Environmental Sciences at MIT; a member of the National Academy of Sciences; born and raised in Mexico
